Biographical / Historical
In 1950, a movement began to form a Covenant church in Wichita, Kansas. The Wichita Covenant Church was formally organized in 1952; in 1953 the church applied for membership within the denomination, was accepted, and dedicated a new church building. The church continued to grow through the 1960s and 1970s. Bulletins, minutes from meetings, newsletters, and photos all reveal a relatively stable period of life in the church. Programs for children were especially popular in the late 1960s and 1970s. Membership peaked in 1969 with 78 members. In 1990, the church voted to change their name from Covenant Church in Wichita, Kansas to First Covenant Church, Wichita, Kansas. In 1992, Trinity Covenant Church, also in Wichita KS, merged with First Covenant Church, a body that retained the name First Covenant Church. Because of dwindling membership and long conversation about selling the church building, the church decided to sell the building in 1999. Money from that sale was used to establish a scholarship fund at North Park Theological Seminary and help with the construction of a building for Covenant Community Church, also in Wichita, KS. The church officially dissolved in 2000.
