General

The inscription at the top reads as follows (right to left); Hangzhou xihu ping hu qiu yue; Literal translation: Hangzhou West Lake Serene Lake Autumn Moon; Interpretation: The first four characters are the location of the image - West Lake just outside of Hangzhou. (Hangzhou is located southwest of Shanghai. It is located on the Grand Canal, and was the capital of China during Marco Polo's visit.) The last four characters (Serene lake/Autumn moon) are a poem/idiom. The implication is that the peaceful and serene lake below not only reflects, but is a reflection of the autumn/harvest moon in the night sky.; ; The inscription along the bottom is merely the manufacturer's name and address.; ; translated by Kazu (student at NPTS), per H Dayle K. Zelenka; Systems Librarian.
