Biographical / Historical
The American Scandinavian Foundation was founded in 1910 by Niels Paulson, who wanted to see the friendly bonds between the United States and the Scandinavian countries strengthened. It's headquarters are located in New York City and it was comprised of ten local chapters throughout the United States. The foundation's fellowship program began in 1912 when scholarships were given to six Scandinavians. As the organization evolved, it emphasized three major activities: membership, student exchange, and publications. Discontinuation of local chapters took place in 1983, with the Chicago Chapter reforming as the American‑Scandinavian Association of Illinois in April 1983.
